Queen Bey’s reign at the top of the charts might be threatened by a surprising challenger.  Music legend Mark Knopfler hasn’t released new music in a while, but his latest project is turning heads.

He’s brought together a dream team of musical icons for a collaborative single – a cover of “Going Home: Theme of the Local Hero” – featuring heavyweights like Nile Rodgers, Joan Jett, Ringo Starr, and Sting.

This all-star track is making a serious run for the number one spot, leaving everyone wondering – can they dethrone Beyoncé?

An iconic cover making a strong showing in midweek charts

The recently released “Going Home”, a cover of his iconic instrumental by the supergroup aptly dubbed Mark Knopfler’s Guitar Heroes, is currently holding the lead by a narrow margin of fewer than 1,000 units at the midweek mark. This makes the final outcome for the week too close to call.

There’s even more reason to cheer for this single’s success. All proceeds from the song will be donated to Teenage Cancer Trust UK and Teen Cancer America, two charities that support young people battling cancer. With every download or purchase, you’re not only enjoying a great song but also contributing to a worthy cause.

The single’s strong performance reflects growing public support. As the week progresses, it’s gaining more and more traction, making a potential upset at the top of the charts a real possibility.

Mark Knopfler’s tough rivals

Mark Knopfler faces some stiff competition for the number one spot. Beyoncé is in the running with her surprise country hit, “TEXAS HOLD ‘EM”. This catchy and upbeat song not only became her first UK number one in 14 years, but also made history as the first time a Black woman topped the country charts.

Meanwhile, BTS member V (Kim Tae-Hyung) is making a strong push for his first solo UK Top 10 single. His song, “FRI(END)S,” is currently sitting at number seven and is generating excitement among the band’s massive fanbase.

With all three acts vying for the top spot, it promises to be a thrilling race to the finish line.

“Going Home” might join an exclusive club of charity anthems

If Knopfler’s “Going Home” claims the number one spot, it will join a prestigious group of charity anthems that have achieved incredible commercial success. Band Aid’s “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” remains a beloved classic, effortlessly securing the coveted Christmas Number One position.

Similarly, Wet Wet Wet’s “With a Little Help from My Friends” and Michael Jackson’s “Earth Song” are just a few more examples of charity singles that soared to the top of the charts.

However, the race for number one is far from over. A mere thousand units separate Knopfler from Beyoncé’s hold on the top spot, with V trailing closely behind.
